Ali Aye Ligang: The most loved festival of Mising People

The celebration of Ali-Aye-Ligang

Our state, Assam is a diverse one with so many tribes living together. One such tribe is Mising and I belong to Mising tribe. We speak differently from the Assamese but we love all the tribes, rest assured no bad blood with any of the other tribes.

And we love our festivals where feasts are grand and pork is served everywhere. Pork dishes and Rice Wine are the main important things that mostly defines our tribe when it comes to cuisine.

When spring comes every year, we get to celebrate the biggest festival of the year that is the Ali-Aye-Ligang.

The most popular and favorite festival of Mising people. We wait for a whole year to get our hands on Purang Apin, varieties of pork dishes made with home grown or wild plants (eatable). Need I need to say, it’s the feast of all feasts. Once you have experienced it you will know for sure why we love it so much.

Ali-aye-ligang marks the beginning of sowing seeds in the rice fields and is associated with agriculture. After completion of sowing seeds and prayers for a good reap it is customary for our people to celebrate with a grand feast.

When is it celebrated?

Ligang is celebrated in the month of February every year. The date varies as we follow the Assamese calendar and it is celebrated on the first Wednesday of ‘Gimur Polo’ or on the first Wednesday of the month of Fagun (Assamese calendar). The festival lasts for 5 days.

What do we do in Ali-Aye-Ligang?

Ligang is not only about a big feast, the day start with sowing seeds, and following rules of not ploughing or cutting trees throughout the festival. The young and adults performs Gumrag Soman (traditional mising dance) in every house of the community giving them blessings for a prosperous year. And the festival ends with hosting big feasts in mising homes where they invite their families and friends.

What do we eat in Ali-Aye-Ligang?

As I have mentioned before, it is the feast of all feasts, and we love to prepare various food items which is only made in this special occasion.

Purang Apin:

Purang Apin is boiled sticky rice which is wrapped first with Torapat and is boiled in water. The wrapping of sticky rice begins in the morning, and there is art in wrapping. It consumes a great amount of time in wrapping hundreds of these. After it is boiled, it is ready to be served with the various pork dishes.

Ali-aye-ligang platter at The Misingland Restuarant

Main Pork Dishes cooked in Ligang

Pork with Lai Pat
Pork with Matimah
Pork with Mesaki pat
Pork with Pitha
Khorikat diya Pork
Fried Pork
Pork with Elephant Apple
Spicy Chutney

Beverage:

Apong is an integral part of our community. Most of our grandparents prefer to drink Apong instead of tea in morning or evening.

And for Ali-aye-Ligang, Apong is prepared months before the festival. Be it Poro apong (Black wine) or Nogin apong (White wine), a Festival or a Feast in Mising Community is only called successful when there is plenty of good homemade rice wine. Now you have a fair idea how much we love our home made wine.

Gumrag Soman

Every young girl or a boy in the community yearns for the Gumrag Soman where they can show their talents in dancing or playing instruments. Much like Bihu (Assamese), we dance to the tune of folks songs and Oi:nitom, using instruments like Dhol, Pepa, Taal, Bahi, etc.

The Mising dance forms imitates life itself. The themes and subjects are mostly about the day-to-day activities in the life of men and women in the community. From washing clothes, daily chores, sowing seeds in a field to reaping them, you will get a very vivid image of lives of Mising people when you watch Gumrag.

My first Gumrag Soman

I remember my first ‘Gumrag Sonan’ back at my Grandparents village in Jonai. My two Pehis (my father’s sister) insisted I join them. I wore a Green Ege Gasor (Traditional Mising attire), my hair into a bun with a fresh Rajnigandha flower and dancing bangles (bangles made of black, white and red wool fabrics).

I felt so embarrassed dancing before my relatives but soon got over it and I loved it so much. It was really fun, knowledge full for me to get to know the basics of our tribe. Unfortunately I couldn’t stay till the end and participate in the feast they throw after completion of Gumrag Soman in the village.

It’s a great time to get together and dance with your friends, getting blessings from your adults. Its a great time to fall in love too, be it a little crush on the Dhuliya guy or Pepa Bojuwa guy. Or falling in love with the girl who is dancing in your group. We often see it happening in the movies and it happens in real lives too.

Not only it is fun for the young, adults are very active during the season, be it making preparations for the Ligang, hosting great feasts for their close ones and friends. The happiest of all are the Mothers, as it is the time when their children come back home from colleges or universities or from their jobs to reunite for a few days and have good home cooked food, visiting families and spending quality times before they head back.

Competitions

In present time, Mising community has come up with various Ligang competitions like Gumrag Soman contest, Modern Mising dance, Anu nitom and Oi:nitom (Singing contest). They are rewarded with certificates and huge prize money. To win in these competitions, brings one so much fame and honor.

I would love to go back home and celebrate Ligang with my family and like so many other people does. But time can be a real pain during the festival when you have exams or you don’t get leave.

The Misingland Ethnic Restuarant

Eventually you have to skip Ligang or if you get invited by your friend you are very lucky. For those living in the city or those is who wants to try an authentic Mising Ali-Aye-Ligang, I would suggest, The Misingland Ethnic Restaurant right at the heart of the city i.e Guwahati.

Address: 1st Floor, SM Complex, Near V2, RG Baruah Road, Ganeshguri, Guwahati

It’s been almost a few years, I have missed Ligang at home due to studies or my work. Thankfully this year, I was craving Purang Apin and one of my friend suggested The Misingland. I went with my friends, Jeena and Chinmoyee and had a blast. Chinmoyee as she is not Mising, it was her first time trying out Ligang.

Our Experience at The Misingland

The food was amazing, the residue of Torapat in the Purang Apin was heavenly. We ate to our heart’s content. Various pork dishes (Pork with Lai leaves, Pork with Black Daal, Roasted Pork) along with Fried Baby Potatoes and Mashed potatoes with dry fish were served.

We were served in authentic bell metal utensils used commonly among the various tribes of Assam. The staffs were very friendly, which made the experience more beautiful and memorable.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t get Apong as they don’t have liquor license.

Decor at the Misingland

The restaurant itself is great, beautiful decor with lights and huge glass windows overlooking the city. Indoor plants occupy the corners and it gives a fresh look to it.

Seating Arrangements at The Misingland

I loved the different seating arrangements available in the restaurant. From traditional sitting on the floor, we love to sit on Pirahs (flat wooden seat) or Mats in our home, so keeping that in mind, they have spacious homely seating arrangements.

Also seating arrangements for Big family or a big party is available. If you are thinking of enjoying a quiet meal with your significant other then there is seating arrangements for couples too.

Comfortable homely seating at the Misingland

All in all, I had a great time at Misingland eating sinfully delicious food and
spending quality time with my girlfriends. Even away from home, I consider this the best way to celebrate Ligang in the city and couldn’t have wished for more.

Thank you Misingland for making us feel at home, away from home.

Most Anticipated Shows and Movies that are coming in April 2019!!

Since the revelation of release dates of Avengers: Endgame and final season of Game of Thrones last year, the world has exploded in an unmeasurable amount of anticipation of what will these two biggies bring to the screen.
How will Thanos be defeated by our Avengers in Endgame and who will finally claim the Iron Throne in GOT or will anyone survive the White Walkers?
These are very serious questions and I with the billions of people worldwide cannot wait anymore to finally get the answers.
Along with GOT and Avengers: Endgame there are plenty of other series that are coming in April and I want to share with you guys some of the fresh and old series that I cannot wait to watch This April.

Let’s begin!

  1. Quicksand (5 April)

Where to Watch: Netflix

A new crime drama is coming my way and I honestly cannot wait to check it out. I’m obsessed with murder thrillers and more merrier if it is an international series.
Quicksand is a Swedish crime thriller based on a book of the same name, where a high school student becomes the center of attraction when a mass shooting takes place at her prep school.
Bonus: Another international teen crime drama is Elite (NETFLIX). Do give it a watch!

2. Criminal Justice (5 April)

Where to Watch: Hotstar (Premium)

Hotstar has announced it’s own ‘Hotstar Specials‘ with the remake of popular BBC series, Criminal Justice which came out in 2008. The remake of the BBC series has a power packed cast, Vikrant Masey, Pankaj Tripathi, Jackie Shroff will be seen playing important roles in the series. The series is about a cab driver (Vikrant Masey) who has been accused of rape and murder after a one-night stand with Anupriya Goenka. Pankaj Tripathi will be seen defending Vikrant Masey as he portrays him as a person who belongs to a good family with no criminal records.
Pankaj Tripathi has been making us all gaga with his serious gangster acting in his recent previous work (Mirzapur) and I can’t wait for this one.

3. The Silence (10 April)

Where to Watch: Netflix

There has been an influx of horror movies where aliens are super sensitive to sound or sight. First came “A Quiet Place”, an excellent horror/alien invasion movie which gets under your skin and literally heightens your senses. Then came Netflix’s Bird Box which also is a movie where aliens possesses your body if you just open your eyes.
Now Netflix has once again come up with another horror/alien movie which resonates quite well with the ‘A Quiet Place’ Movie. There are so many similarities like ‘the sound’ and a ‘deaf’ character in each of the movie. Stanley Tucci and Kiernan Shipka from “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” are the lead actors.
Though the trailer is very similar to ‘A Quiet Place’, it is noteworthy that the film is based on a 2015 novel, long before “A Quiet Place’ happened.
I’m quite an alien lover, so this excites me a lot, or you could you just watch it to spot the differences and similarities between the two movies.
Note: ‘A Quiet Place’ is streaming on Prime Video, if you still haven’t watch this epic alien movie.

4. You vs Wild (10 April)

Where to Watch: Netflix

Man Vs Wild’s Bear Grylls is coming to Netflix as in an interactive series ‘You vs Wild‘ where Bear Grylls will be seen in a variety of scenarios where you get to pick his next move to complete the mission.
I love watching Man vs Wild, his energy and enthusiasm is something I admire the most.
Since the wide success of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, another movie-length interactive; Netflix is not shying away from interactive series.
Now the question is will you pick the right choices to save Bear Grylls in the new series? Good luck!

5. Black Summer (11 April)

Where to Watch: Netflix

Zombie fans anyone? This month is full of blood, gore and revenge why not keep some love aside for the Zombies.
Black Summer, a prequel series to the Z Nation series, this series will focus on the earliest days of first zombie apocalypse. The plot centers around a group of strangers who band together to survive and get back to their loved ones.

6. Game of Thrones (14 April)

Where to Watch: HBO/ Hotstar (Premium)

Need any introduction to GOT? Honestly I didn’t watch GOT till last year as I always found it too overrated because of the hype and the crazy GOT fans all over the world makes it unbearable sometimes.
But once I got the taste of Blood and War, I was unstoppable and finished the entire 7 seasons in 10 days. Now who is crazy? 😝
Anyway, Winter has finally come which was bloody annoying to hear it throughout the series because it took 7 seasons for Winter to finally come.
And with the Great Wall being taken down by Viserion, now a White Walker Dragon and White Walkers advancing towards Man Kind. Jon Snow sleeping with his Aunt, God I cannot wait to see the face of Jon when he realizes he’s been sleeping with his Aunt.
So many juicy and hair raising moments to look out for in the Finale Season. It has almost been unbearable.
Cometh already GOT!!

7. Avengers: Endgame (26 April)

The biggest and most anticipated film since last year is the Avengers: Endgame.
Thanos’s infamous snapping of fingers wiped out most of the population from the Universe. The departure of our favorite superheroes was a tear jerker. I remember the movie theater going pin drop silence during the scene.
Now it is left to the few superheroes, our only hope to defeat Thanos and probably reverse the unimaginable effect and bringing back our lost heroes. We can only count the days till 26. Best wishes to everyone!
What do you think will happen at the end? Will we get back our superheroes? Let me know in the comments.
Two of my favorite series are coming back for a new season on Netflix. It is not yet confirmed but I’m hoping so much they set a release date in April.
  1. The Alienist: The Angel of Darkness

If you are looking for an Old century crime then The Alienist is a brilliant, award winning series which premiered back in 2018.
The Alienist takes us back to the Victorian era where a sick serial killer, murders teenager prostitute boys in the most gruesome ways to teach everyone a lesson. Enter Dr Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist who tries to find the killer with his team of a newspaper illustrator and the first female police officer (Dakota Fanning) in New York.
The second season is likely to be released this month but the date is not yet confirmed.

2. Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) Part III

If you haven’t watched Money Heist, what have you watch? Undoubtedly the most watched non-English series on Netflix is the Phenomenal Money Heist.
The obsession with this crime drama with the viewers cannot be explained. The Heist at the Royal Mint of Spain is nothing like any ordinary heist.
The Brain of the Heist is a Professor who has been planning this since his teenage years and recruits several die-for-money small time thieves and convicts. The planning and preparation for the heist is notable and very intelligent that baffles even the most intelligent police forces. I cannot tell you how much I love this show and was sitting on the edge till the very ending of the Part II.
For the love of God, go watch it if you haven’t, feel the adrenaline, the rush and the big dreams that all of them dreams about once getting out with 2 billion money.
Yes!! 2 billion freshly minted money. That’s enough to convince you to watch this show.
And with a new series coming, I cannot wait to know what The Professor and his team of elite thieves have in store for us.
Have you watched Money Heist?
Which movie/show you are more excited for? Let me know in the comments.
Love,
Nancy.

Minimalistic, Budget Friendly Gift Ideas for Him! Pt. 2

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing well. I’m doing great as it is my first blog anniversary 👏🏼. Today is the day when I posted my first blog dedicating Priyangshu writing a few pointers about minimalistic gift ideas for man. And I just thought why not do a part two because it is my beau’s birthday and another dedication for always supporting me since Day 1.

Well I have planned something special and a little over the budget surprise for Priyangshu, I just want to blow his mind off. (Haha) I just can’t wait. I’m pretty nervous and psyched about it. But hey, let’s get started on the Minimalistic gifting ideas. Shall we?

5 Minimalistic Gift Ideas for Your Man

1. Books:

If your guy likes reading books, this is a great opportunity to gift him his favorite book. This might be tricky given there are so many genres, you might opt for some mind reading. Try to know what books he frequently reads. Be it an Anime, soul searching or a classic book of poems, it is a sure certain he will appreciate this one.

2. Customize T-shirts:

Customize things are very much intimate. This time prepare a gift that is intimate and fun. Take a few favorite phrases or words that he likes or a sentence that signifies your love to your beau. There are a lot of websites online that sell customize T-shirts. Get in touch and tell them what you want.

My boyfriend is addicted to Fortnite, so in order to tease him, I customized this T-shirt that says “Eat, Sleep, Fortnite, Repeat”. Ain’t it cute?

3. Zip Closure Leather Wallet:

Need to say anything more about Wallets? There are many different types of wallets with different price tags. But Leather Wallets are the best in quality and durability.

To put a cherry on top of your gift is to get your man a Zip Closure Leather Wallet. It is so essential to keep all the things inside the wallet safe. Important things like Driver’s license, ATM cards and other important papers are carried around on daily basis. A Zip Closure Wallet will keep everything in its place and I am sure, he will appreciate this thoughtful gift.

Another cost effective and easy gift is to get him a succulent plant. Succulent plants don’t need much care and makes excellent decor on a coffee table or his working desk.

You can even opt for a fake succulent plant. There are so many beautiful, tiny little fake succulents that will brighten up his working space and No need of Watering!

5. Photo Frames:

This is a classic gift idea but is always huge no matter what occasion it is. The best way to preserve your memories is to keep a photograph of you and your boyfriend when you went on that special weekend trip or when you went to a local photo booth.

3 Easy DIY Hacks to keep your Thigh Boots from Slouching

Why Thigh High Boots are huge in Fashion?

Thigh high boots trend is the epitome of fall/winter fashion. Everyone loves a good, fitting thigh high boots that can be worn with anything and everything which makes it such a versatile piece in your wardrobe. It has that oomph effect that can dramatically change an unflattering outfit and make it a dashing, flattering to your body outfit and make you the center of attraction. Doesn’t everyone wants to be the center of attraction?

Why people dislike Thigh High Boots?

But with every great things there comes some stuffs that makes many women to ditch these stylish pieces and stick to ankle boots and sneakers. One serious and hazardous problem of thigh high boots is that it can easily get loose if not properly taken care of and leads to slouching which becomes a liability to your entire outfit and God, it’s very distressing.

I’m a huge lover of thigh high/over the knee boots and it does goes with every outfit I have in my wardrobe. So it’s essential for me to keep the boots in place and not to be scared of my boots to slide off my thighs and slouch. With every outfit, I make sure everything is perfect so I won’t have to rush to the bathroom to fix any malfunction or embarrass myself in public.

With experimenting my own over the knee boots, I came up with 3 very easy, cost effective hacks to keep my over the knee boots in place and strut my stuff in confidence. I want to share these hacks with you beautiful people so you can try it for yourself, finally embrace these stylish pieces and say goodbye to slouchy boots.

3 Easy DIY Hacks to keep your Thigh Boots from

The things I needed to get rid of slouchy boots are just lying around your place or you can get it in any craft store and won’t cost you much.

All you need is:

1. Thigh High/Over the Knee boots,

2. A pair of thick thigh high stockings (black),

3. Double side adhesive tape, and

4. Safety Pins.

Let’s get crafty!!

1. Wearing Thigh High Stockings

This is the most common and effective way of keeping your boots in place. Stockings of any color (I mostly prefer thick black opaque stockings) when worn under your thigh high boots can prevent it from slouching. This hack is best for those women whose boots fits almost perfectly and they just want a little more support.

2.Using Double side Adhesive tape

I definitely belong to this category. My boot size is perfect for my feet but I have skinny legs and it does create problems for me to get this sleek thigh high boots look. I always suffer from slouchy boots and it make my entire outfit unflattering.

Even the first hack (wearing stockings under my boots) doesn’t work for me. I need more support.

The second method is simple, you will need double side adhesive tape that you can buy from any store.

Step 1. Wear your stockings.

Step 2. Position them just below your boots where it ends.

Step 3. Apply one side of the adhesive tape to each of your stockings.

Step 4. Wear your boots over your stockings.

Step 5. Peel off the other strip of the adhesive tape and apply it to the inner side of your boots.

Make sure the tape is applied properly to both the stocking and the boots. Stand up and check thoroughly. Make sure the adhesive tape cannot be seen by others (or it will be a fashion disaster)

Viola! You are ready to go.

3.Using Safety Pins

If you feel you cannot trust the adhesive tape and it may come out while you are walking. I have another foolproof hack for you. Instead of using adhesive tape you can just use a few safety pins.

Step 1.Wear your stockings.

Step 2. Position them just below your boots where it ends.

Step 3. Wear your boots over the stockings.

Step 4. Take a few safety pins and carefully pin the stockings and boots together. You are ready to go.

These are the hacks that has helped me from getting slouchy boots.

Buy my boots here.

A Few Shots of mine wearing Over The Knee Boots using the above mentioned hacks:

A few precautions can be taken to further prevent the slouching of boots:

1. Keep the shoes in upright position with the help of boot clips.

2. Stuffed your boots with newspaper or old magazine to maintain the shape of your boots.

3. Buy leather boots if you can afford it. Leather boots don’t lose their shape very easily.

Hope you like the easy hacks to get rid of slouchy Thigh High Boots. Do share your views in the comment section.

Buy the mentioned Lipsticks on Nykaa.com. It is the best online cosmetic shop in India, my personal favorite because of all the crazy deals and offers they have for their customers.

We have reached the end of this post. I feel amazing to share this with you people.

Comment down your favorite lip colors or show hands if you are using any of the above lip colors. If you have any queries don’t hesitate to ask.

Till next time, Take care!

Nancy.

My Hilarious and Embarrassing Moments at the Saraswati Puja, 2019

Hey guys, hope you all doing great. Many of you might think I’m not Assamese because I look 100% tribal and mostly people think I’m Arunachali (Arunachal Pradesh), Khasi (Meghalaya) or Nepali (Sikkim) whenever I travel to these states or just going out in my city, Guwahati.

A Little About Me:

Well to clear out all the confusion, I’m Missing, and yes I’m tribal, we are tribal people and my ancestors have been living here in Assam since I don’t know when. But I’m Assamese and I know Assamese (most people talk to me in Hindi and English thinking I’m tribal and most of the time I just go with it because I’m just too tired of correcting people 😌).

Saraswati Puja

As I live in Assam, Saraswati Puja (The Worshipping of Goddess of Wisdom and Knowledge) has been very huge in the recent years and it shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. It has been an open stage all over the state where young women and young men come out dressed to the nine wearing traditional/fusion Mekhela Sadar (woman) and traditional Dhuti Kurta (man). Some prefer wearing other traditional attire like Lehenga choli, the choices are endless.

You can just call it Winter Fashion Week in Assam showcasing the diverse cultures and their traditional attires. The streets become a runway for the masses to show their outfits may it be traditional or the trendy ones.

Not a huge Fan of this Trend

I am not a big fan of these new developments where a simple ceremony of worshiping Ma Saraswati has somehow been overshadowed by a glitz and glamour show of who wears what, who wore the best?

This has increased a certain level of insecurities and mindless indulgence in things which is in true sense utter worthless. Many people spends hours and hours of time and money in creating that one look/outfit for this day. For me it’s insane, I myself have gone to 2-3 Saraswati Pujas in my life and I just go as my usual self, I rather spend my money on food 😝 then buy stuffs for these ceremonies.

Clearly it is not my scene, and I have not gone to any since my college days. But this year I made an exception and went anyway. One of my friend Chinmoyee invited me to go along with her and her friends to her University, USTM and I was like okay, let’s go this year. Actually I brought a very elegant maroon skirt last year and I haven’t got a chance to wear it out and this is a perfect scene where I can flaunt my beautiful baby out.

10/02/2019

Finally, the day arrived and I was super excited. I was dressed to the nine, I loved the way my outfit looked and I was super comfortable and confident.

We arrived at her college and it was really fun and cheerful, to see everyone wearing traditional attires and praying and having Prasad, khichidi and kheer.

We finished our khichidi and we were about to take a tour of the university when all hell broke loose. I felt like the entire sky came crashing down on me. It was hilarious and embarrassing at the same time. And it didn’t stop at one and it kept going on till I have nothing else to lose, literally nothing. Come, let’s all laugh together at my misadventures at Saraswati Puja, 2019.

The many highlights of my day at Saraswati Ma Puja, 2019:

1. Firstly, my hell began when my shoe decided to gave up on me in the middle of the campus while taking a tour.

I tried as hard as possible to look normal and walk normal as the sole of my heel made it difficult to get a hold of the ground. I quickly sat on the grass, didn’t even check before sitting. My friends were hovering above me thinking of solutions and I was nervous and embarrassed, guilty to have ruined the day for all of us.

2. Secondly, my shoe left behind a piece of the sole for everyone to witness my misfortune.

Somehow, a Security Guard caught eye on the piece of the heel and quickly knew that it was mine. He was very kind and told me not to worry as you can fix it with glue. It’s embarrassing enough and on top I am being called on to take back the piece. I just couldn’t get up and walk back to retrieve the piece. I just ignored it, the betrayal I received, the shoe piece just didn’t exist for me anymore. 😒

3. Thirdly, while sitting on the grass contemplating what to do with my shoe I sat on chewing gum.

And it got stuck to my back like a white patch on my beautiful skirt 🤦🏻‍♀️. I was safe to say got a little luck there as there was dog poop a few inches away from where I was sitting.

4. Fourthly, Just as I was trying to fix my shoe, I spilled the glue all over my fingers and my fingers got stuck to each other.

I was horrified and to make it worst my finger got glued to a nearby pine tree. It was horrible and hilarious. I was losing my mind. My friends were cracking jokes saying, “In worst case scenario we have to bring back the pine tree with Nancy”. 😂 It just lightened the whole atmosphere and we all broke into laughter.

My friends were a life savior yesterday. They were trying to make me feel better and running around to get glue, carry bags and all. Chinmoyee, my friend, my savior was very calm and took upon herself to fix this problem. I was to make the hard choice between choosing to fix the shoe or just go barefoot.

Finally, I decided to go barefoot.

Chinmoyee and her friend, Madhusmita took one shoe each in their sling bags and disposed it off. The things girlfriends need to do for their girl 💁🏻‍♀️.

Luckily, I was wearing a floor length skirt and stockings, and I had to walk on my tippy toes to keep me from tripping over my own outfit. That would have been the cherry on top, right? Well it didn’t happen, your girl is A-okay.

I felt quite relieved going barefoot, and I had my girlfriends with me to provide emotional support. We had a fun time posing for photos, laughing at our own misfortunes. A huge shoutout to my lovely friends, Chinmoyee, Madhusmita and Madhusmita Ba.

I came, I slayed barefoot and left my shoes behind. 🤣🤣

Here are the few moments we were able to capture even after the whole incident:

Glad I took a photo of myself before my shoe betrayed me

Who would have thought I don’t have any shoes underneath my skirt 😅

Madhusmita Ba and me busy trying to remove the god awful chewing gum from my skirt.

Chinmoyee and Madhusmita Ba

Madhusmita Ba, Madhusmita and myself waiting for Cab and posing 😅

All smiles even after all the horrible stuffs that I went through, can’t stop me from having fun, can you?

I hope you loved this piece, and laughed your face off. You are welcome. Though it was embarrassing, it will be etched to our souls for the remainder of our lives. Can’t believe we pulled it off and got back in one piece, it is just super amazing.

If you have ever gone through a horrible yet funny wardrobe malfunction do comment down. I would love to hear your stories.

See you next time. Till then take care.

With love,

Nancy.

Best Trek in Mechuka to see the Magnificent Mechuka Valley

Hey guys, how are you? It’s officially winter and just a few more days to New Year. Can’t believe it’s already 2019. I had a fun year and towards the end of the year I got the blessing to go on a trek in Mechuka.

As you may already know, back in summer I went to this remote magical place Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh, and I have already posted a blog all about it. Click Here to read my previous blog on Mechuka.

This winter we decided to go back to Mechuka for the Adventure Festival and also exploring the outskirts of Mechuka and going on treks around Mechuka. We did explore a lot and found this beautiful places right outside of the Town, which left me speechless. I mentioned before I loved Mechuka in Summer but winter in Mechuka is beyond beautiful.

I will do another blog on the sightseeings outside Mechuka Town. In this blog, I will share my trekking experience to the beautiful mountains of Rinjinling which is outside the town and it’s one of the best trek in Mechuka, which you will know as I write more.

One fine morning, after the Adventure Festival, we finally got ourselves into Gayboo’s Traditional Lodge again and we asked Mr. Gebu to make arrangements for us to go on treks.

Click Here  to know more about the Trekking activities in Mechuka.

Why we chose Rinjinling Trek?

We came back mostly to go on treks. Unfortunately, it is winter and most of the trek routes are closed due to snow in the mountains and the Pasang Sonam Tso Lake Trek is closed due to some security problems, we didn’t know the exact reason why it is closed to the tourists.

We were disheartened to know the treks being closed. Mr Gebu helped us so much by arranging a trek to the Rinjinling mountains and we agreed to go.

About Rinjinling Trek

The mountains of Rinjinling is easy and the best trek in Mechuka which provides an exceptional views of the Mechuka Valley and an experience of a lifetime with beautiful sunrise and sunset at the top of the mountains, among the clouds.

On 26th of November, we got ready for the trek. A minimum of 6 people is required to go to the trek, a sum of 3500 Rs per person is to be paid for the tents, food and porters. But we were just two, my boyfriend and another guy from Bombay. We had to pay extra 500 bucks for the trek as we were just three people.

DAY 1

Driving to Dorjeeling Village

Our journey started from Mr Gebu’s Lodge at around 10.30 in the morning. Mr Gebu couldn’t come with us but he dropped us to the Dorjeeling Village in his car. We packed everything necessary, even got a ball in our way to play in the mountains.

We haven’t been to the Dorjeeling Village before and the ride to this village is a beautiful one. One can also trek from Mechuka to the Dorjeeling Village. It takes an hour to complete and most of the locals prefer trekking instead of driving to the village.

The beautiful village of Dorjeeling

We made a stop at a house, a close friend of Mr Gebu Sona, they dropped us here and we got our bags, bid good bye to Mr Gebu and started our trek.

Kiran, our little brother who works at GTL was the main guide, along with Kiran, Dachi and Panden were two other older gentleman who came along with us as guide and helpers, who carried most of the baggage.

Passing through the plains of Dorjeeling Village

Heading to the Best Trek in Mechuka, Rinjinling Mountains

We started our trek by walking along the plains of Dorjeeling village, beautiful morning, pleasantly warm. The mountains in front of us, golden grasses on both sides of our road, little vegetations can be seen too. A good pleasant walk through this countryside and little streams in our way, we finally reached the foothills of the mountains.

On our way up

As we were ascending, we could see the entire Dorjeeling Village. We climbed the mountains for two hours taking little breaks, hydrating and eating snacks. We stopped in between to take in the views, the gorgeous mountains, the green forest hiding in between. You can see mountains till your eyes meets the horizon. It’s completely isolated and pristine. We really loved it. As afternoon came by, the winds grew stronger, I was about get to blown away by the winds. After climbing for 2 hours we finally reach the last stretch of our trek, and as we looked back, we could see the Town of Mechuka from the top.

The last stretch of our trek

Beautiful Views from Rinjinling

We reached our trek in the afternoon, and it was exhausting but refreshing to be surrounded by such gorgeous views. My eyes couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The Mechuka town far away glittering in the sunlight, the Dorjeeling village to the right felt so little compared to Mechuka Town. To the left snow peaked mountains can be seen, and on the back undulating mountains can be seen with only two houses. It was amazing, sitting on the top of a mountain and getting mesmerizing views from all side, I felt immensely blessed.

The lonely Shed House

While taking in the gorgeous views, our helpers set up the tent. The Bombay guy was quick to snap photos in his camera. He was stunned just like us.

Where to Set up Camp?

Our guide led us to a plain cleared area on top of a mountain. This is the site for camping. There were signs of camping here. The grasses were cleared up, ashes from the last bonfire could be seen. Our guide and porter set up the camp.

Where to Eat?

After setting everything up, we went downhill to one of the Shed House, where our lunch and dinner will be prepared. It is the shed house owned by the old gentleman back in the Dorjeeling village. During summer, he and his family comes to stay here to make local dairy products from the cows and return home in the winter.

Lunching scenes in our Little Shed House

The shed house was all to us, and I felt grateful to be near fire and inside, as the afternoon winds are dry and very chilly.

What to expect for Lunch?

A quick lunch consisted of Maggie, we added chips by ourselves. After lunch our party got divided.

My boyfriend, Priyangshu, the Bombay guy and Dachi bhaiya went back to the tent to gather woods for the fire. I stayed back with Kiran and Panden bhaiya to help them bring back water from a nearby stream. I carried 5 liters of water uphill and couldn’t feel my back for hours. It was worse than the whole trek. Even Kiran and Panden bhaiyya swore they found this more exerting than the whole trek.

Found this beauty near the stream

Panting and swearing my way up (a lot), we finally reach the shed house and I threw myself in the floor. We took a good 30 minutes rest before heading back to our tents.

In winter, night falls very soon, around 4.30 in the evening. I decided I can’t go back to the shed house to eat dinner. It’s too risky for me. I don’t want to trip and fall after having a full tummy. That would be shame. So, me and Priyangshu just stayed back while the others went back to prepare dinner.

The snow peaked mountains to our left

Beautiful sunset from Rinjinling

Spend the Night Stargazing

It was one of the most beautiful night I have ever seen. A night full of stars. We stare gazed for hours, we saw a few satellites, we even named a gaint cloud, as it changed it’s shape after every 30 minutes. The genie lamp of Aladdin and a Dragon among a few (haha).

It was amazing, there was no scented candles or cute throws and pillows to make it a romantic camping night. We were in the middle of nowhere, with temperatures rapidly going down, but it was very romantic for me to connect with someone who could imagine the same thing as I’m in the exact same moment. The feeling, it was out of the world. The best feeling one can have with their loved ones.

Camping under the stars, counting the stars, the unknown feeling to what lies ahead, it’s very raw. I highly recommend couples doing it. It’s the best.

Bonfire and A full Moon Night

Our friends finally return after a period of two hours. They brought back dinner. We all had tea, little wine. The Bombay guy went crazy over the stars. He said he has never seen this amount of stars altogether, it was endless, billions of stars. It was therapeutic for him. He played old Hindi classic songs and we played modern songs, it felt great, the trip was very therapeutic for all of us.

Eat Dinner under the sky full of stars

We had dinner around 9, rice with egg curry and veggies. I was not a huge fan of the food as I was craving for chicken, but it was delicious. The moon finally showed up around 9.30 and it was beautiful, another half an hour of chatting and we retired to our tents.

Beautiful sunrise, first sun rays hitting our tents.

DAY 2

Early morning, I woke up around 5.30, too lazy to get out of my sleeping bag. When I heard the other guy calling us to see the sunrise.

Amaze yourself to the captivating sights from your Campsite

As soon as I unzipped the tent, the rays came bursting in, the very first rays touching us. And I looked back and time stopped for me. I was looking in awe what was in front of my eyes. A sea of fog floating above the Town of Mechuka, I couldn’t breath for a few seconds. It was such a beautiful sight. I was screaming at my boyfriend to come out and look. I wanted everyone to just witness what I’m looking at.

Mechuka Town at 6 am in the morning (above), Mechuka Town at 8 am in the morning after the fog has cleared.

Have Breakfast with beautiful views from Rinjinling

We were the first to see the sun light while the town of Mechuka is still covered with fog. We took many pictures, we saw the fog slowly disappearing while sipping tea on our grand seat on top of the mountain. It felt like a theater, so beautiful.

Our little guide, Kiran posing for the camera

*You can have a full breakfast right here.

After finishing up our tea, the guys decided to play football nearby. It’s not quite plain and they finally lost the ball down the mountain when Priyangshu kicked too hard. It was funny and a sad situation. They tried to search for the ball but couldn’t get it.

Heading Back

It’s time to head back. We were to have our breakfast in the old gentleman’s house. We packed up our tent, took a few minutes to say good bye to this gorgeous place.

The view of Dorjeeling Village from Rinjinling

The Bombay guy taking his time to bid farewell to the mountains

After walking for an hour we finally reached the plains, looking back at the mountain top where we camped, it couldn’t be seen from the plains. I wanted to sleep on the grasses, it would be so peaceful to sleep there for a few hours while the sun is still bright and before the strong winds return.

Fell in love with these beautiful golden grasses

Vegetation in Dorjeeling

We had Ghee Chai and snacks when we reached back to the house. Dechi bhaiya cooked us Maggie and eggs for our breakfast. We went backyard to the green house and brought back small peaches, they are different from the ones we eat in the plains, sour and quite delicious with a pinch of salt.

Tea with my favorite person

Ghee Chai (above) and Chaang, a traditional millet wine (below)

Life in the Dorjeeling Village

Our conversation with the old gentleman started with Chaang (traditional Millet wine) who is originally from Tibet, he told us about the trades between India and Tibet before the roads happened. They brought back Traditional Tibetan utensils and various other things from Tibet and they would sell various things they grow in their village. Now, it is not possible after the war of Indo-Sino in 1962. The old gentleman now 81, reminisces his childhood days with us.

We wanted to trek to one of the religious caves from the old gentleman’s house but later decided to just explore the Dorjeeling Village.

With pocket full of sweet peaches, and a little tipsy after drinking the wine, we bid the old gentleman good bye and headed out to explore the rest of the Dorjeeling.

Requirements for the Trip:

6 people minimum

Price: 3500 per person (includes food, tent and helpers)

Time spent: 2 days and 1 night

Travel Tips:

  • It’s best to carry your own tent and food, and hire a guide otherwise it will be very expensive if you think of going on other treks too.
  • Carry Water
  • In summer carry raincoats.
  • In summer take precautions like a pinch of salt to keep the leeches out.
  • Carry a torchlight/portable lamp.

I will write more about Dorjeeling and other places nearby Mechuka in my next blog. Hope you like this post, like and share it with your friends.

Thanks for reading, see you soon!

Love,

Nancy.

Festival Vibes: Outfit Ideas For NH7 Weekender 2018

With Nh7 Weekender around the corner, it’s time to put on our best festival spirits. With music festivals there is always room for getting all out when it comes to styling you and your outfits.

Keeping that in mind, I have curated four chic, hassle free outfit styles that will not only help you beat the chilly nights of Meghalaya and keeping you stylish but also groove to your favorite songs without the feeling of any uneasiness. (Tripping over own your outfit 😐)

NH7 Weekender is a two day affair of amazing music and food. With a beautiful set up and even more beautiful Meghalaya, can you blame anyone to not go and see for oneself. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend this time, due to my other commitments. I have to skip this year and yeah I will miss a very good dancing platform as I go crazy in music festivals.

But I have a little something for you people, even though I won’t be present, it will be a sweet thing for me to do this.

I have four outfit styles lined up for this festival, which I hope you will like and get some ideas of your own by checking it out.

Also Read: Look chic in SHEIN Braletes

I have two outfits for each day, one during the day when it’s nice and warm, and one for night when it will be very cold and you will need something that will keep you warm but also stylish.

Day 1. Afternoon

I don’t have the weather forecast of Meghalaya but it will be warmer in the afternoon. You can dress up light, check out the venue, click some pictures of yourself and basically just chill.

For day time, I have chose this high waisted denim shorts with this cute black polka dot tube top and bonus you can flaunt your belly button in this outfit.

You can wear just this or if you think you might feel cold, you can always layer it with a long shrug/kimonos anything you have in your wardrobe. I have layered my outfit with this maroon long shrug which gives all the festival vibes. To add some chunkiness, I have wore this maroon chunky ankle boots which is not preferable for dancing but add some glam to your outfit. This outfit is super cute, very chic and super simple to get ready with.

Day 1. Sundown

It’s getting chilly and your cute afternoon outfit won’t do any good to you during the night and when the actual fun begins. So for night time I have chose this, chunky knit black crop sweater and paired it with very warm brown plaid pants. With a cropped sweater, these high waisted pants goes perfectly keeping you warm and ready for the night. These pants are my absolute favorite as it has a layer of inner fleece lining which helps very much in the cold nights.

And for shoes I am wearing these white sneakers which goes with everything and you can wear it throughout the festival which means light packing which saves you a lot during the travels.

Day 2. Afternoon

Another day with more music and fun, and more to get all dressed up. For the second day, I have chose an all black attire with a pop of bright color.

Any music festival without blacks doesn’t feel good. A basic pencil black mini skirt paired with a black bralette sounds about right, you can be an Angel of Black (in a stylish way). I have created this look by wearing a black mini skirt, with a plunging V-neckline black bralette and slipped a mesh black top to keep it chic. A pop of color added with this bright yellow jacket that will brighten your outfit and if you get lost, your friends will find it easy to search for you (bonus point).

I did mention about packing light so here I’m wearing the same white sneakers and it perfectly goes with the outfit.

Day 2. Sundown

Last night of amazing music and fun, for this last outfit I chose this lace black sports bralette and a pair of warm black track pants. I have paired it up with a blue denim jacket and also with a pink midi shrug. You can chose either or go for a heavy bomber jacket to keep out the cold.

Wearing the same white sneakers.

Don’t forget to Accessorize:

1.Rings, Nose rings, earrings, layered neck pieces, Head crowns, bracelets all can accentuate an outfit greatly. I have wore a self made bracelet which can also be worn as a choker. Silver rings and glittery black nail colors to give that luxe and shiny feel.

2. A fanny pack/other sling bag/small bag pack

I don’t like this whole fanny pack trend but it has been very useful for me when I’m out and about, and don’t want to carry a sling bag. This is great for traveling and also for the festival occasion. Just wrap it around your waist and your ready to go dance. Keeps your things in place and no worries of theft or the feeling of losing your precious handy bag.

Alright folks, that’s it for now. Hope you like this blog post about the music festival outfit ideas.

Comment down which outfit you liked the most or thinking of trying it out yourself.

Wish you all a happy and fun times at the Nh7 Weekender.

Photographed by my dear friend @lasubondhar, a doctor by profession, but keen to capturing moments and always helpful, also down for taking good pictures.

And also by my talented dear brother, @wild_light_films, who endured all my demands and silliness, and patiently helped me with the shooting of the photos.

SHEIN Bralettes: How to Effortlessly look Chic in Bralettes

Bralettes have been trending for a few years now and there is no stopping any time soon. Why not, you ask? Because this little clothing is so pretty, comfortable and so easy to style. Be it satin, silk, velvet or lace, this versatile piece goes with everything and oomph up your style quotient a notch higher.

A must have undergarment staple to give you freedom from the tight, underwires of bras and give you comfort and the feeling of spaciousness.

Also Read: All about the Instagram Magic Bra

I fell in love with bralettes ever since it has become a trend. I’m so obsessed with them, now every time I go shopping or do online shopping my eyes kind of always goes searching for bralettes. I have a decent collection of bralettes in different shapes and colors. And I never turn down an opportunity to wear them out.

In this blog post, I will be showing you the cutest and chic bralettes collection I have from SHEIN. If you love online shopping then SHEIN is no stranger to you. If you haven’t heard of this online shopping site, make sure to check them out because they have the most trendy, cutest and chic outfits in budget friendly prices.

So without further ado, here is how I styled my SHEIN bralettes:

1. V-neckline Bralette

This deep V cut bralette with thin straps is a perfect go to bralette for a day out that doesn’t show much skin and pretty much covers everything up but still leave that sexy yet elegant look behind.

I have paired up this bralette with wide black pants which gives 90s vibes with a modern twist. You can also go for that cool girl look by accessorizing it with simple neck pieces.

2. Suede strapless Bralette

Do I need to tell you anything more of suede? It does all the talking once you can get hold of anything suede. This cute pink suede strapless bralette is my favorite. Isn’t it the cutest? The soft leather fabric gives you the ultimate comfort that doesn’t come much from the basic strapless tops. It also has wide elastic bands at it’s top and bottom to ensure it stays in place.

I love wide pants so much, they are so comfortable and classy. I have again paired this suede bralette with wide black pants, keeping the rest of the outfit simple as the bralette does all the work.

Wear it out on a summer date with your significant other or a day out with your girls. You can also pair it up with denim shorts if you are heading to the beach, it will make all the heads turn.

3. Lace Trim Bralette

Grey is my favorite color after black and when it comes to intimate wear, greys are all I could think of. Be it a basic bra, sports bra or a bralette, the color grey can shut all the colors out.

I always wanted a bralette in the color grey and I was so happy when I saw it in their website, my happiness reach to the moon when I realized it is a lacy grey bralette. Although I wear XS, it was not available at that time, but I couldn’t resist and ordered in size S. How can I let it slip away from my hands?

It is very soft, delicate and feels like your second skin. It fits perfectly, few inches above your navel. There are adjustable straps to adjust according to your shape and size.

I have paired it with plaid light grey pants and a denim shirt that absolutely looks sexy and elegant. Throw a denim jacket or shirt to get that chic Victoria Secret Model vibes. No more envying them, when you can rock one yourself.

This bralette is also perfect for music festivals. Pair it with shorts and be a boho goddess by layering it with a long printed shrug and dance the night away.

Go ahead, bring out your bralettes that you have stocked away, wear it out and be a head turner.

A Trip to Mechuka- The Untouched valley of Enchanting Rivers and Majestic Mountains

Hey guys, how is summer treating you? It’s unfair to even ask with the ever rising temperatures. But with summer vacations and weekends, we always try our best to get away for a while, to enjoy the vacation or to escape the intolerable heat.

I must say I had an amazing time this summer, a totally unexpected trip to one of the most remote place on Earth. Yeah, you heard that right, no connectivity with the rest of the world. And I enjoyed every bit of it. Sometimes you just have to do it. You know, cut yourself off from the world and immerse yourself on the lap of Mother Nature. I had the opportunity to do it and I didn’t regret for once.

The beautiful town of Mechuka

I had an entirely different plan for this summer. I wanted to escape the heat and enjoy nature just near the city. So I extensively planned our stay.

A little back story on how I reached Mechuka

So we decided to hit the Brahmaputra Jungle Resort, near Sonapur just an hour drive from the city of Guwahati. But alas, with so many plannings and activities I laid out to do at the resort, we met with a huge disappointment that push me into depression. We were not age appropriate for the resort, as couples younger than 25 are not allowed.

It’s best suitable for family, group of friends and married couples. Though we were bit disappointed, if you happen to go their with family and friends, you will absolutely love this beautiful resort amidst a jungle. Beautiful cottages with stunning views and variety of outdoor activities provided by the resort won’t disappoint you.

After the sad encounter at the resort, my boyfriend tried to reassure me by planning a trip to Arunachal Pradesh. It was supposed to be an all guy trip but I was so upset he decided to include me on the trip. I got super excited and was happy all over again.

The Journey from Guwahati to Mechuka:

Our journey started from Guwahati traveling to Naharlagun by train where we will meet all his friends and together head for Mechuka.

One step at a time. Before reaching Naharlagun Railway Station.

We didn’t get out much as it was so hot, but we went to Itanagar before leaving for Pasighat. Had an awesome evening at the Senki View point.

Where we stayed in Naharlagun:

We stayed at the Hotel Riverview, not too far away from the railway station. The hotel has comfortable rooms at reasonable prices and bonus point has a Spa too. I went for the Aromatherapy for 60 minutes and which cost me 2500 bucks. There is a shopping mall, Sohum just across the hotel, you can do all the shopping there.

Naharlagun to Pasighat:

Our next stop was Pasighat. We stayed at Hotel Pane, rooms were good enough, amazing food though.

Getting on a Hanging Bridge:

We all went out for a night drive located on the outskirts of Pasighat (don’t know the exact place) where you can see the mighty Siang river. There is a hanging bridge all the way down the mountain that connects the small village on the other side. We decided why not cross the bridge? It was night time, rainy and very slippery but we were very determined. The road was so narrow at some places it will make you want to leave the place and return to the surface immediately. But we went all the way down, crossed the hanging bridge and came back. We even met a few locals who were going back home, and this bridge happens to be their only of way of transport. They immediately got to know we were tourist and even gave us quite a hearing about wandering there at that time of the night.

The Joy of getting back in one piece

It was my first time getting on a hanging bridge and the feeling I had, my heart was racing and I squeaked every time I felt like the bridge is swaying too much. But the feeling of doing something for the first time and knowing that you did it, is a whole another level of euphoria. You feel so overwhelmed, so motivated, all the fear that was about to engulf you vanishes and you only remember the victory.

Haeding to Our Final Destination: Pasighat to Mechuka

On a rainy afternoon, we headed for our final destination, Mechuka. But luck was not with us, we had two major incidents on our way. Just outside Pasighat in the middle of nowhere, our vehicle broke down. Our driver had to go all the way back to Pasighat, to bring back a mechanic. We passed our time idly for almost 4 hours on the roadside, sightseeing, capturing photographs and other stuffs. Finally our driver came back and about 30 minutes later we were again on the road. Our schedule was changed and it was evident we will reach our destination very late.

We couldn’t have get this beauty captured if our car didn’t break down.

Enroute to Along. A solitary tree stands like a fighter when the valley is covered with Mist

We reached Along at around 1 am in the morning, and reached the West Siang district at around 5 in the morning. We first got the glimpse of Mechuka, on a sign board that said ‘Mechuka 89 kms‘. Every one was energetic again, for traveling more than 12 hours can pretty much mess you up. With the destination nearing our face lit up again. The road to Mechuka is pretty amazing compared to the potholes covered road leading to Along. What a journey it was. Never have I encountered such road before, but this shouldn’t let you down for what lies ahead will completely blow your minds away. I promise!

Siko Dido Waterfall, this mighty waterfall will certainly take your breath away and is on the way to Mechuka.

Experiencing the aftermath of a Landslide:

The next incident, we faced was a landslide, it’s a first time for me again. Most of the time during landslides road remains close for more than a week or so but we were very lucky as the Army Commissioner was on the other side, and the road must be cleared. After a wait of nearly 4 hours the road was cleared and we started our journey again.

Machines and Men working together to clear the road

Reaching Mechuka

We were still 2-3 hours from our destination and after a tiring 24 hours journey we entered Mechuka, we first witnessed river flowing, then short grasses covering the mountains, with evergreen trees subtly touching the windshield of our car. I was shocked as the scenery is completely different from those we have come across on the road. Finally we could see ourselves surrounded by bright green mountains, and a town lies ahead of us. Seeing people and a town completely took us aback as we could see no souls on our way here. It completely blew my mind away, just thinking so far away, so remote there is a human civilization, a town of merely 500 homes just near the Indo-China border. With a sore 24 hours traveling the sight of this beautiful, mesmerizing town felt like Amrit to our souls, divine, healing our bodies and a relief to our sore eye sights.

About Mechuka

Mechuka, also known as Menchuka is the last town of India, near the border. About 30 kms from the town lies the Indo-China border. Having come to a place so remote gives an ethereal feeling. Like you are in an another planet. No any cell reception is available here. Only a weak BSNL network is available. We stayed out of connectivity for 5 days.

We were a group of 9 people, and I was the only female in the group. That didn’t create any problems for me because as long as everyone in the group shares the same value and passion as myself I can get along very well. I have met so many people on my trips, they were all strangers at first but at the end of the trip we return back as friends.

Our lovely Homestay “Gayboo’s Traditional Lodge and Homestay”

Where we stayed: Gayboo’s Traditional Lodge and Homestay

Our accommodation was the highlight of our trip. We stayed at the most well known homestay in Mechuka, Gayboo’s Traditional Lodge and Homestay, a little two storied aesthetically pleasing homestay at the center of the town. The name as suggested is truly traditional with modern amenities such as heaters, a washing machine so you won’t be disappointed living in this lodge. Our host welcomed us with big smile and their hospitality made us feel like home even though we were so far away from home.

Summer is the best season to enjoy the lush greenery and flowers on full bloom. Our homestay has come up with innovative ways to recycle plastics as seen in the photographs.

Even when you enter the gate, you will see the lodge is so beautiful, there are variety of flowers at every corner of the lodge. Every thing has been used to grow these flowers, from water pipes to tires you will find great diy flower pots. I greatly appreciate their recycling items that is usually thrown away.

Now that we have finally arrived, it’s time to put on our best adventure’s spirits. But first rest, eat and get some good sleep. Food cooked in our lodge was excellent from chicken, egg to pork everything felt like home cooked, we ate to our heart’s content. Later in the evening we went out shopping to get some warm clothes as it is very cold even in summer. After returning we all played cards, had wine and dinner. After dinner we all prepared for bed as the next day our adventures starts.

Day 1. Trekking to Dorjeeling Hilltop aka Menchuka La Trek

We all needed a good day’s rest, so it’s evident we got up pretty late. I was the only person to wake up first, (I am an early bird). As I was all along I took the opportunity to click many photographs of our beautiful homestay.

The two storied Homestay has a beautiful balcony overlooking the mountains. An original bear skin is spread out on a hammock to keep lodgers warm in the chilly weather.

At around 2.30 pm we finally came out, did some food shopping, the boys got a foot ball from the shop and we headed for our very first adventure. Trekking to the Dorjeeling mountain. The trek name is also known as Menchuka La Trek and it starts from the Bumjipanga bridge just outside the main town towards the Dorjeeling Mountain.

Bumjipanga bridge is the starting point of the Mechuka mountain trek.

One could see a very clear resemblance of Mechuka to the famous Hollywood sign in Los Angeles. A huge sign “MENCHUKA” is engraved at the top of the mountain similar to that of HOLLYWOOD.

It’s barely visible during Summer due to the surrounding green mountains, after a lot of efforts I could finally get one good photograph of the humongous sign.

Everyone can trek to that mountain and see for themselves the huge sign. We too decided to trek our way to the mountain.

The view from the foothills

The mountains are only covered by waist length grasses and is very easy to trek however as we were ascending we got tired very soon.

Halfway through the trek, View of the Mechuka town.

After trekking for 3 and a half hours we finally reached our destination. We were all standing on the last letter, A of MENCHUKA Sign. It is made of concrete laid on the mountain and painted in white. So I was pretty disappointed, my expectations were quite high but much praise for the strength and passion of the people of Mechuka for building this sign, something to be proud of.

The last letter, A of the sign painted in white.

And standing there, feeling elated, I was only thinking about how an hour ago I almost gave up but now I’m here.

Encountering an unwanted guest on our journey to the Top

We were surrounded by mist, couldn’t see more than 100 meters. We got completely wet on my way up and as I was just enjoying myself having reach the top, and then I met with my biggest fear. Leech!! Ahh right on my stomach, I gave out a scream as I am very scared of leech and anything that don’t have legs. It give me creeps. My friend removed the leech and I was frantically searching for these bloodsuckers all over my body. I got bitten more than 5-6 times on my way back. With subsequent encounter my fear completely vanished. It is a good feeling though.

Listening to music and enjoying our very recent feat.

We listened to music, drank wine, ate some food sitting on the top of the mountain. And finally it’s time to get back. The most difficult part of the trek was walking horizontal on the mountain, so there is this steep mountain on one side and a narrow trail and then there is nothing, if you slip you will end up at the bottom. I was so scared, I just wanted to give up, but I got help from my friends and safely pass that difficult phase.

Enroute to the the top

Heading Back to the Town

Now going down a mountain is very easy, but as it was rainy, chances of getting slipped is very high. I luckily didn’t slip even once. It took us 2 hours on our way down. And another 20 minutes to reach our lodge. We were tired and freaking out, all were rushing to the bathrooms to clean themselves up and check for leeches. Many brought back leeches with them. (Haha) It was scary.

First time in so many months I felt alive, though completely exhausted I was so happy to able to do it, to conquer the mountains even though it was enduring the feeling you get when you are at the top, the feeling you have when you realized you did it, all the hard work, the moments you felt like giving up, everything vanishes as you reach the top. The feeling can’t be described but can only be felt. The best time I had, forever will be in my mind. Exhausted we retired to our beds early.

Day 2. Fishing and Exploring the nearby places

The second day of our exploring Mechuka town started around 2 in the afternoon, after having fried spicy Maggie for lunch which was very delicious, I still yearn till this day.

A house under construction

Exploring the Town and Fishing

We decided to go fishing in the Yargyapchu river that flows through the town, (Siang in Pasighat and Brahmaputra in Assam) and also crossing over to the other side on a hanging bridge. The boys made traditional fishing bamboo rods that were available on the bank of the river.

Pretty busy in Fishing

Instead of fishing I went to the hanging bridge sat idly on the starting point of the bridge (too scared to start on my own) waiting for the boys to come by. The hanging bridge was quite stable made of wood, unlike the one near Pasighat which was entirely made of bamboo and quite slippery.

I took pictures of the hanging bridges, of the boys fishing, little wild flowers that were growing abundantly near the river bank.

A local crossing the wooden hanging bridge, connecting the small village with the town.

With fishing rods on our hands we crossed the hanging bridge, he kept asking me , “Do you see anything unusual?” Honestly I didn’t see anything unusual, I was too focused on not tripping and falling into the river. The boys continued fishing on the other side, The Menchuka Sign is quite visible from this spot and is way closer than the Bumjipanga bridge. The boys spent hours fishing but couldn’t catch a single fish, only thing we caught was Leeches. (Ouch) Before leaving, we gathered some dry twigs and branches and started a fire, when it started raining again.

A photo op on a hanging bridge? Hell yeah!!

Hanging Bridges can be Scary

A very scary and unusual thing happened to me when I was crossing back on the hanging bridge. My fear has gone away and I could finally see through the spaces when I felt something, I felt like the bridge is moving away at an unbelievable speed, and I started screaming, “Oh god, Help me, Where is this bridge going? Please make it stop” I closed my eyes and held on to the ropes so tight when I heard my friends laughing. I was like, ‘what is happening?’ He explained to me, ‘It’s more of an illusion. When you stare down long enough, you will feel the wind is carrying away the bridge in opposite direction and any second it will flip and you all will fall down into the river.’

When I finally got back my breath, I remembered the bridge scene from Final Destination 5, I was scared out of my mind but was laughing at myself so hard. I had mixed feelings, both scared and very happy. I will never forget this incident in my life.

Pretty little wildflowers growing on the bank of the river.

And we played Football

After crossing the bridge, just near the river, there are spacious plains where one can play football. The boys chose a place where there was certain diggings, symbols made out of cane, twigs and one of my friend, Jamo thought it was a burning site for dead bodies and got so scared, he refused to stay even a single second. There were a few passerby, and to make his fear go away they asked them, ‘Is this some kind of cemetery?’ None could answer our questions. After much persuasion he finally gave in, cursing everyone, saying this is not good, if anything happens tonight, you all will be responsible. I found it pretty funny, after a good game of 30 minutes, we all return back to the town. All exhausted but the search for leeches never stopped. During dinner time, we asked our host the lingering question, and to a great relief it is just a popular picnic spot by the river.

Day 3. Visiting the New Gompa and Exploring the town.

The beautiful mountains and the town of Menchuka from the New Monastery on a Hilltop.

Our last day in Mechuka, we started out quite late in the afternoon, around 3 pm to visit the new Gompa, situated on a hilltop that overlooks the town. It can be seen from our homestay too. We didn’t take any guide with us, so it was clear we didn’t know the way and had to climb our way up the mountain to reach the Gompa.

The New Gompa on a Hilltop, 2 kms away from the town.

Samden Choling Gompa

The Samden Choling Gompa is a newly build monastery that gives unparalleled view of the town. We were lucky as it was sunny, and we could clearly see everything, the town, the military airstrip, the beautiful wooden houses. It was so peaceful there, apart from our group just a few other people were there. We took a tour of the monastery and sat at the edge of the mountain. It was a lucky day for us, with continuous rain for the past two days, the sun was shining bright on the third day and we could see all of Mechuka. We could also see the military airstrip from the top.

We finally saw the way to the monastery and return back. We strolled through the town going back to the field for a last football game.

Exquisite isn’t it? Little Wooden Houses with brightly colored roofs and walls is a common sight In Mechuka.

Beautiful little wooden houses with prominent roofs was a delight to see. Different shades of Red is the most used color in Mechuka. Every house though small, was slightly different then the next one. With the beautiful mountains behind, the view was surreal.

Kids playing football, Football is the most preferred sport in Mechuka.

Wherever your eyes laid, there is always something to admire, something to leave you mesmerized. As the town is small, you can easily walk from one point to another on foot. And with the beautiful houses, I highly recommend to talk a day off and just stroll through the town.

This mischievous little kid forcing the other kid to pose for the camera. He even did some dance for us, so cute!!!

On our way back to the field, we could see so many kids coming back from playing football. Wearing jerseys of their favorite players and some even donned crazy hairstyles, they were not afraid to experiment their looks. With big smiles in their faces, teasing each other they pass by.

The Countryside

A Token of Love on our last day in Mechuka

When we reached the field, the last group of kids was about to leave, when the boys invited them to play with them. They happily accepted and a friendly match began. I sat their watching them play and behind them I saw the most beautiful rainbow. It was huge and everyone stopped to see it. I believed it was a parting gift from Mechuka to us as next morning we were leaving. A wave of sadness swept through my entire body, I didn’t want to leave. I wish I could stay there for a few more days.

A perfect evening!! The local kids and the boys playing a friendly football match.

After returning from the field everyone met up, and we talked. It was our last day of our trip, after reaching Pasighat everybody will go on their separate ways.

Nightlife in our beautiful Homestay

Bidding Goodbye

It was hard to let go off that feeling of separation, we had so much fun together. I had the most amazing time with my new friends. They were so kind and humble, they made me feel like their own sister, helped me out if I got scared on my way, even took out leeches for me, well friends do that stuffs for you. I am utterly grateful to find such beautiful friendship and I thank them for everything. I consider myself very lucky to have met beautiful people in my every trip and making our journey more wonderful.

I had the time of my life in Mechuka, the experience was out of the world. Mechuka is not only beautiful for it’s breathtaking views, the people of Mechuka with their beautiful smile and heart made my heart filled with overwhelming gratitude. Spending a few days in the most beautiful place in Arunachal Pradesh, made it very hard for us to return. We started our journey back very early.

Mechuka will always forever remain very dear to our hearts.

With solemn faces and beautiful memories etched to our hearts, we bid Mechuka goodbye.
